My take: Scream very much embodied the mid- 90's. The use of cell phones was available, but still seemingly limited; no large scale use of social networks; and the characters all held a pop culture laden cynicism about them. I think of Scream as an almost satiric ha-ha to the late 70's and 80's horror genre.
Some great lines, and a great hook at the end (2 killers) make Scream a horror film for the ages.
